Why, then, is Lamine Yamal not part of that circle?
Technically, he is unavoidable. His impact on Spain, since the European Championship won two years ago, has been constant, dominant. Yet at this World Cup the 10 belongs to Dani Olmo — who, with all due respect, is not the Barcelona forward. Yamal stays on the understated 19. A matter of dressing-room codes.
As The Athletic has noted, it has always been this way in Spain. The 10 carries a symbolic weight that goes beyond ability, even the most obvious kind. At 18, Yamal does not simply “need” it. It would feel premature. The idea itself unsettles the order.
In Madrid’s federation system, seniority comes first: the player with the most caps chooses before the others. Olmo has 50, roughly double Yamal’s tally. He had already taken the 10 before the teenager had fully entered the national team picture.
Yamal takes it as it is. Calmly. The rules are known, almost self-explanatory to him. Spain is not Barcelona. Here, Dani Olmo wears 20 and Yamal the mythic 10.
At club level the logic shifts. At Barcelona there was a need to restore a symbol after Messi. The 10 became that space again, regardless of profile, even if Yamal’s game is more lateral, more elastic, less confined than the classic occupants of the shirt.
At Camp Nou the number is expectation, and also market. Shirt sales surged after he inherited it from Ansu Fati last summer, mirroring his rise on the pitch.
Spain, though, does not operate on that register. A national team preserves hierarchy first. Reputation, presence, sequence.
And perhaps that is part of why Yamal is so accepted inside the squad. He stays within it. No friction with the structure. No need for two digits to confirm anything.
