One of the most beautiful goals in Champions League history has become a TikTok trend. You might think it was the finish, the delicacy of the footwork, that made it so appealing. Not quite. AI has made it possible to replace the players, and Mesut Özil’s famous goal for Arsenal against Ludogorets in 2016 has been recreated with an unlikely assortment of characters. The German and goalkeeper Borjan have given way to cartoon figures, actors, animals and even dinosaurs. Woody from Toy Story takes on Buzz Lightyear, Mr Potato Head and Jessie. SpongeBob makes an appearance. So do Walter White from Breaking Bad and Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. We are all getting used to what AI can do with video. For better or worse, a few prompts can be enough to make something go viral. The original came in a routine group-stage match, which Arsenal won 3-2 after coming from behind.

With a minute or so left, Mohamed Elneny slipped a pass through to Özil. The German was suddenly clear, bearing down on goal with the chance to snatch a win that had looked out of reach. Borjan came off his line. Özil lifted the ball over him with a delicate chip and carried on, keeping it under control. He looked ready to shoot, but a defender had recovered and moved across his path. Özil used the man’s momentum against him, nudging the ball infield with the lightest of touches. A second defender closed in. Özil shaped to shoot, checked himself, then did it again. Both men ended up on the turf, wrong-footed and out of the game. Özil stepped around them and rolled the ball into the net. Six seconds, seven touches, all with his left foot. Three opponents beaten, without a flicker of panic. It was a remarkable goal then. It still is.
Did not know Woody was an Ozil fan.

The goal has since found a second life. In the AI edits, Woody or Shrek glide past the defenders in slow motion, the camera following from behind the goal, close enough to catch every touch. The footwork is so clear, the timing so precise, that the sequence almost looks choreographed. It is easy to see why creators keep returning to it. The angle is perfect, the action easy to follow, each feint setting up the next. Often, a melancholy French song accompanies the footage: a remix of Emma Peters’ “Clandestina”, its languid beat lending the sequence a dreamlike quality. Özil barely seems to break stride. The defenders lunge, scramble to recover, then end up on the turf. The whole thing needs very little embellishment.
this ozil goal is going crazy viral on tiktok, x and insta. people are editing it with ai and putting every fiction character in the place of ozil, its getting millions of views and likes and it reminds me of the AI signiture meme that went to almost millions last month.

Arsenal won that night and finished top of their group, ahead of Ludogorets, PSG and Basel. Their European campaign ended in the last 16, when Bayern Munich thrashed them 10-2 on aggregate. You wonder how Woody, Shrek or Walter White would have fared against that Bayern side. The goal was extraordinary long before AI came along. Now it keeps turning up in new forms, with a different protagonist each time. Özil’s left foot does the rest.
