The AIC Football Grand Gala honours the year’s best players in the most rewarding way: through the votes of their peers

Football is, above all, a universal language. It speaks to everyone differently, yet it is always understood. Its power lies in its directness: in a fraction of a second, it reaches somewhere deep inside the person watching. The disbelief of an impossible goal. The roar that shakes a stadium in the 90th minute. The tension hanging in the air before a penalty. Every moment leaves a mark. On everyone. Its secret is its apparent simplicity: an immediate game, easy to read, easy to reproduce. All you need is a ball at your feet to feel its pull. It is a goal or it is not. You win or you lose. And yet, amid all that beauty, something was missing. A moment when the people celebrating it were not those watching from the outside, but those who create it every day.

That need gave rise to a ritual which, since the late 1990s, has become a fixture in the history of our sport. In 1997, the Italian Footballers’ Association created a night devoted to a simple question: who was truly the best? Today, the need to measure yourself against your peers feels stronger than ever. We live in a time crowded with words and opinions, when anyone with a screen can pass judgement, often without ever having heard the sound of studs skimming across the grass. That is why the vote of those who know the same effort, the same fatigue, carries a different kind of weight. Every year, players, coaches and referees come together to vote for and honour the finest of the season just gone.

The 2026 edition marks a significant new chapter. For the first time, Lega Calcio Serie A joins AIC in organising the event, with the support of events agency Wonder Project S.r.l. and sports marketing agency Demetrio Albertini S.r.l., and with Haier as Title Sponsor. A partnership built to celebrate the championship in full, making the Gran Galà del Calcio AIC the brightest stage in Italian football. This is where the very best will take their place: the best player overall, the Top 11, the club of the year and much more. The people who make the game, recognising one another. The night when Football votes for Football.

That is what gives the evening its prestige. Letting professionals judge one another has always been the highest and purest form of recognition. In Renaissance Italy, people admired works of art, but the worth of a master—the skill of the craft, the precision of the technique—was determined by the Guilds of the Arts. The final word belonged to other sculptors, other painters. The same is true at the Gran Galà del Calcio AIC. From the ideal Top 11 to the referee of the year, from the coach who made the greatest impact to Serie B’s emerging talent, from the best club to the crowning of the best player of all.

These votes and judgements go beyond mutual respect. The awards offer a wider picture, becoming a mirror in which the whole game can see itself. Football is always changing shape. The pace changes. Tactical demands change. So do the needs of the game. Those on the pitch feel that evolution before anyone else, absorbing it through breath and muscle. When professionals choose the outstanding figure of the moment, they draw an invisible line. They show where the game is going. Taken together, the names that emerge become a compass for what comes next. A clear, definitive way of seeing, through the eyes of those who play, coach and officiate, where football stands today—and where it is heading.
