Kathleen Kruger is Hamburg’s new sporting director, and she is the first woman to hold this role in Europe’s top five leagues

Hamburg have announced the arrival of a new sporting director for next season. So far, nothing unusual, except that, for the first time in the history of Europe’s five major leagues (France, Germany, England, Italy and Spain), the role will be held by a woman. More precisely, it is Kathleen Kruger, who will begin her new adventure at the helm of HSV starting next July 1. For Kruger, of course, this appointment has not come out of nowhere: we are talking about a professional with long experience behind her, who held the role of team manager at Bayern Munich (meaning the men’s team) between 2012 and 2024. More recently, she worked on the sporting strategy of the Bavarian club’s structural development.

Over the course of her career, Kruger has also received important endorsements. For example, from Thomas Muller, the former Bayern stalwart now at the Vancouver Whitecaps: “It is Kathleen who holds the team together,” Müller had told Bild. “Whatever problem we have, we can always turn to her”. Now more important words have arrived: “With Kathleen Krüger, we have secured an outstanding figure who has worked at the highest international levels for many years with Bayern Munich,” said Michael Papenfuß, Chairman of HSV’s Supervisory Board. “In 17 years she has gained considerable experience in the environment and has demonstrated exceptional organizational and leadership skills.”

Before becoming an executive, Kruger was a footballer with Phönix Schleißheim and Wacker Munchen, clubs based in Bavaria. She was later signed by Bayern, where she played for a few seasons. Finally, as mentioned, she began her career within the Bavarian club. And now the great opportunity, the great challenge, has arrived. “I am very happy about the trust placed in me,” Kruger said. “It is a real privilege to be able to play a decisive role in shaping the future of Hamburg, one of the most important clubs in German football. I have followed the club’s positive growth in recent years with great interest and admiration, greatly appreciating the results it has recently achieved.”

Kruger’s arrival confirms a clear trend, at least in Germany: this season, in fact, Union Berlin entrusted the bench to a woman, Marie-Louise Eta, until the end of the season. Eta thus became the first female coach in the top division in the history of Europe’s five major leagues. Since taking the job, she has recorded two defeats, one draw and one win: results broadly in line with those of her predecessor, Steffen Baumgart, with the standings not changing very much. Union Berlin are now 12th in the table, +10 above the relegation zone. Eta has effectively only “certified” her club’s survival, but in the meantime she has opened a path. Now it is Kruger’s turn, and obviously this is no coincidence. Quite the opposite: it is the right thing.
