David Silva is playing again. Three years after retiring, he has decided to return to the game after accepting an offer from Supreme Sha Tin, the Hong Kong club currently sitting eighth in the Hong Kong Premier League, the country’s top division. Alongside the official announcement, Sha Tin also posted a video on Instagram in which Silva introduces himself to his new supporters. For the former Manchester City and Spain midfielder, who won the World Cup with Spain in 2010, it is an unexpected return: he retired in 2023 after three seasons with Real Sociedad, following a serious knee injury suffered during pre-season.
“I’m very happy to join Supreme Sha Tin,” Silva says in the video, which you can also see below. “And I can’t wait to go to Hong Kong, enjoy the culture and the people, and this new adventure in football.” It had been some time since Hong Kong’s top flight welcomed a player with such a recognisable name. The last comparable arrival was probably Diego Forlán, who joined Kitchee in 2018 before retiring for good.

Alongside the announcement of Silva’s arrival, Supreme Sha Tin also revealed that supporters will be given priority access to training sessions in the coming weeks, giving them the chance to see the Spanish midfielder at work. There will also be exclusive content about his signing. A player of this stature, as is so often the case, brings attention that extends beyond the football itself. Sha Tin is clearly looking to generate interest around the club while adding to the growing profile of the game in Hong Kong. That process has been under way for some time. Now, with Silva’s unexpected move, it has received a significant boost.
