Several weeks have passed since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived in Galicia, and since the warm welcome he received from the Deportivo de La Coruña supporters, his new fans. The enthusiasm of those first few days, the kind that comes when a crowd can embrace a great player — even at 37 — after years of difficulty, has only grown. Much of the credit goes to the former Barcelona and Chelsea striker, who has scored three goals in his first three Liga games.
On his debut against Elche, he produced a superb first touch before finishing the move with a left-footed half-volley. Against Málaga, the following week, the Gabonese striker beat the goalkeeper with a clever first-time finish. Then, in a match Deportivo dominated and won against Valencia, Aubameyang made it three in three with a beautifully delicate lob.
Aubameyang is enjoying a remarkable late-career resurgence. Since 2023, he has scored more than 65 goals for Olympique Marseille, Al-Qadisiya — the Saudi club where he spent a year — and now Deportivo. His ability to keep performing at such a high level certainly owes something to his professionalism, but also to a passion that has never left him. You could see it in the way he has taken to the city. A few days ago, he was filmed joining a “pachanga”, the Galician word for a kickabout played in the street, organised by some children in A Coruña. The video went viral within hours.

A few hours after his arrival, Deportivo captain Diego Villares spoke about Aubameyang at a press conference. “His signing has excited everyone here, the fans and the team too. We know what he is capable of.” He has certainly lived up to it. Deportivo are still unbeaten, seventh in the table and already four points clear of the relegation places. Much of that is down to their Gabonese striker. Aubameyang, for his part, has said he feels “welcome” in this new experience. He also said that “coming to Deportivo is also a way for me to remember and honour my maternal grandparents, with whom I followed the great Depor during the Champions League years.” A lot of time has passed since then, and it is frankly difficult to imagine the Galician club returning to those heights. And yet, Riazor has a new hero now. One who seems to have left time behind.
