Hong Kong and Inter in a Nerazzurri night. The city skyline lit up: a twenty-minute drone show dedicated to the club, rounded off with music and light displays to close out the evening. At the center of it all was Christian Vieri, returning to wear the club colors as the exceptional face of the event organized in the city. In front of an audience of around three hundred people, the former striker met fans and enthusiasts at an event billed as Black as the Night, Blue as the Sky. Speaking with Undici, he discussed Inter and a following that now stretches far beyond Italian borders.
“Hong Kong is a crucial market for Inter,” Vieri explained. “Throughout the year, I have many friends who travel from here to Milan just to watch matches at San Siro.” The Asian stop is part of Inter’s summer tour schedule. On August 1st, the Kai Tak Stadium hosted the clash against Manchester City, with the Nerazzurri emerging victorious. In two days’ time, it will be Juventus’ turn to take the pitch against Chelsea.
Elite European football had already graced Hong Kong a year ago during the first edition of the city’s football festival, featuring Liverpool against Milan and a North London Derby between Arsenal and Tottenham – the first ever played outside the UK. Nearly 100,000 spectators attended in total. On the sidelines of the event, Vieri spoke to Undici about the relationship between Inter’s history and its global footprint. It is a greatness measured by twenty-one scudetti (league titles), three Champions Leagues, and the 2010 Triplete (treble).
“The Inter brand is among the strongest in the world, recognized in every corner of the globe,” Bobo reiterated. “Every football fan knows Inter.” Over 42,000 spectators packed into the Kai Tak Stadium for the match against Manchester City. During the Asian tour, Vieri personally represented the club, taking part in an open training session and an exclusive meet-and-greet with forty supporters. Fans had the chance to mingle with the players, snap photos, and collect autographs.
His bond with Inter has remained unbroken long after his playing days ended. His final season in black and blue was 2004-05, right before his cross-city move to AC Milan. They were six years in which Vieri left a legacy that is still vividly remembered. “The club was always fantastic to me,” he recalled. “We collaborate today, and it’s truly wonderful to be able to work with a club I played for for so long.”
For the fans in Hong Kong, the August 1st fixture was a massive occasion. It was a chance to see Inter in the flesh and get a taste of that electrifying atmosphere usually confined to San Siro. “We are so incredibly excited,” said Charles Lung, 45, a member of the Inter Club Hong Kong and a Nerazzurri supporter since 1998. The team had not set foot in the city since 1997. Lung added: “Truth be told, we are almost more excited about the Inter event than the match itself. All of us want to experience the exact same atmosphere here in Hong Kong that you get over in Europe.”
During his chat on stage, Vieri rewound the tape of his years in Nerazzurro, praising the sheer force of a crowd capable of packing out San Siro’s 75,000 seats week in and week out. “I had six fantastic years. We have unbelievable fans; the stadium was absolutely full for every single match,” he reminisced.
In Hong Kong, football knows no time zones. As the drones trace their final Nerazzurro circle across the sky and the crowd slowly dissolves into the night, one simple truth remains: colors born on the banks of Milan’s Naviglio can now cross oceans without losing their intensity. It is no longer only Milan telling Inter’s story to the world – increasingly, the world hands a piece of its own voice back.
