Jorge Mendes’ presence runs through several of European football’s most visible operations at once. His agency is involved in the representation of Lamine Yamal and, more broadly, maintains a direct role in aspects of Barcelona’s squad planning. At Paris Saint-Germain, players linked to his agency — Vitinha, João Neves, Warren Zaïre-Emery and Bradley Barcola among them — have been central to two consecutive Champions League-winning campaigns. Mendes has also received 13 Globe Soccer Awards for Best Agent, the most recent in 2025.
In recent days, his name has again surfaced in connection with José Mourinho’s appointment at Real Madrid, completing what has often been described as an extensive network across Europe’s major clubs.
Mendes is 60 years old, born on 7 January 1966, and has worked in football for three decades. Over that period, his agency, Gestifute, has expanded beyond traditional representation into a wider management structure. Around ten years ago, Chinese group Fosun acquired a majority stake in Wolverhampton Wanderers after investing in Gestifute. In the seasons that followed, Wolverhampton’s recruitment profile shifted significantly, with a large number of Portuguese players arriving at the club, many of them represented by Mendes. A similar pattern, though less pronounced, has since been observed at Nottingham Forest.
According to estimates published by European Business Magazine, Mendes’ personal wealth is currently around 1.8 billion US dollars. Revenue from commissions tied to Gestifute clients generates tens of millions of euros per transfer window, supplemented by contracts, bonuses and image rights across a wide portfolio of athletes.
That portfolio extends beyond football. Alongside footballers such as Yamal, Vitinha, João Neves, Zaïre-Emery and Barcola, Mendes also represents Charles Leclerc in Formula 1, triple jumper Patricia Mamona, surfer Frederico Morais and cyclist João Almeida. In total, he is reported to manage the careers of 149 professional footballers.
Within football, Gestifute’s recruitment strategy has also expanded into Africa. The focus is on identifying emerging talent at an early stage, a model that recalls the agency’s involvement with Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Mendes’ network at the age of 17.
The structure of the operation continues to rely on long-established relationships and access across multiple markets. Despite tighter FIFA regulations on agents’ involvement in transfers and player-club negotiations, Gestifute’s pipeline of clients remains active across Europe and beyond, with no indication of a slowdown in recruitment or placement activity across major leagues.
