Palermo’s new stadium, designed by Poupolous, will be a little gem perfectly integrated into its territory

The Barbera will be completely renovated, but it will not lose its historical identity, its connection with the Parco della Favorita and the entire surrounding environment.

Palermo have taken a concrete step, one of the most important of all, in the process of redeveloping the Renzo Barbera stadium. After the project was announced in March, the presentation has now arrived: the Poupolous studio, one of the most important in the world in the field of sports infrastructure, has in mind to create a structure that aims to become a point of reference for the Rosanero club’s community, but also a platform to attract national and international events, generating long-term value for the city and the entire region.

The project is part of a broader urban regeneration that puts the Barbera at the centre of everything, not only as a high-level stadium capable of hosting international competitions, but also as a structure able to host concerts and other cultural events. And that is not all: Palermo’s new venue will be fully integrated with the city and its community. Rather than operating as a destination in its own right, the new stadium is designed to be open, accessible and active all year round. New public spaces, services and facilities will strengthen the relationship between the stadium and the surrounding neighbourhood, helping to generate social interaction, economic activity and a renewed urban identity.

From a purely architectural point of view, the new Barbera will have sections closer to the pitch, with fully covered stands. New hospitality areas and spaces for fans will be built, and full accessibility will be guaranteed for every generation and for the whole family, thanks to an expanded food and beverage offer. And yet, at the same time, the rebuilt stadium will not forget its historical identity and heritage, will maintain its relationship with the Parco della Favorita and the splendid views of Monte Pellegrino, while introducing contemporary elements that enhance both the stadium experience and its connection with the landscape. The venue will also respect its context from an environmental point of view: integrated photovoltaic systems, low-resource-consumption technologies and rainwater recovery strategies will ensure a low impact and tend towards greater energy self-sufficiency. In the new surrounding public space, mobility based on pedestrian access, cycle paths, electric vehicles and public transport will be promoted. Complementing the stadium, there will also be a new adjacent structure that will serve as Palermo FC’s headquarters. This building will host offices, a museum and spaces dedicated to fans and guests, further strengthening the club’s presence and its bond with the city.
